The Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore Receives a Gift of 500+ Photos

The Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College has received a gift of more than 500 photos, including works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Alfred Stieglitz, Richard Avedon and Diane Arbus.

The donation comes from the collection of photographer-curator Jack Shear and spans the history of photography from its birth in the 1840s to contemporary works.

Included in the gift: early war photography, experimental works, portraits (including Edward Steichen’s of Carl Sandburg) and studies of the body and gender.

“Borrowed Light: Selections from the Jack Shear Collection,” featuring photographs selected by Shear in conjunction with Tang director Ian Berry, will be on view at the museum from Saturday, Feb. 6, through Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016.
