Upcoming Mandeville Gallery Exhibition: Jane Swavely

Jane Swavely
On view February 8 through June 14, 2020

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of women’s arrival at Union College, the Mandeville Gallery will be producing exhibitions this year that highlight the work of women artists. The upcoming exhibition features works by Jane Swavely.

Swavely studied at Boston University and the School of Visual Arts in New York and is the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship. Her work is in numerous public and private collections, including the JP Morgan Chase Art Collection and the Allentown Art Museum in Pennsylvania. Previously represented by CDS Gallery in New York, Swavely is currently a member of A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, where her most recent solo show, Jinx, took place in November 2018.

“The paintings simultaneously point to the history of the medium while maintaining a firm conversation in the now. My aim is to create a place of space and light to inspire a shift in perception that is at once familiar and unfamiliar. Although the work depicts abstracted forms and colors, it is based in the landscape tradition, exploring the boundary between the conscious and the subconscious, deriving inspiration from both the natural environment and supernatural forces.”
